Mixtape Experiment 2008
And now, it is the time you've all been waiting for...Robyn's third annual mixtape experiment!
You may know the drill. If not, here's what happens: post a song title (with its artist) as a comment. If you can email me the song file, or post a link, that would also be helpful. I will compile all the songs into one master playlist, the idea being that we'll get a plethora of different songs all together in one big happy mix. Don't just pick a random song; pick one you like or love or find floating through your head or the one you keep coming back to. Or something along those lines.
New for this year: include a "liner note" that you want to go along with the song. If you really don't want to, that's fine, but it's always nice to get some different perspectives on a tune.
I'll be picking a song too, and collecting from other posting sources, possibly.

5 Comments:
I'll pick two, because they're in my head most of the time.
The first is actually a song (although I believe it'd a dandling song, or a song for singing to you babies.) although it's also a slip jig. This was recorded when Elizabeth was very old, possibly on her death bed, and as such, neither the recording quality, nor the singing, is as good as it could be. However, you can still hear her wonderful singing in it, and it sounds like it's full of vitality and joy.
Elizabeth Cronin - Cuckanandy
The second is a polka that I fell in love with earlier this year and had to learn. It's played by the fiddle master Paddy Cronin (90+ years old and still going strong) sometime in the 50s, probably, but at any rate after he emigrated to the states, heard the sligo masters (Coleman, Morrison, etc) and completely changed his style from Kerry to Sligo fiddling. At least, this is what I'm told. No name for it though:

Apples in Stereo - Same Old Drag. Too catchy to hate, too smiley to frown upon it. It makes you cry when the song is over because you have to resume your horrible non-"Same Old Drag" life.
Fink - Trouble What You're In. This acoustic jam is my trouble theme song. I basically get into trouble just so I can put it on headphones afterwards.
These are my favorite songs of this very second! Capture them in a mixtape pleaaaase.

Grand Mal - Best Con in Town
Nathan Asher and the Infantry - Turn Up The Faders

Sarah McLachlan - Plenty
Sarah is my favourite artist of all time. It was hard to pick just one song. Her songs are beautifully laced with imagery and this one is no less.
Heart - Magic Man
The opening song on their debut album, Magic Man quickly became a hit signal after "Crazy on You". Its a story from a point of view of a young girl who is seduced by an older man, much to the dismay of her mother who says she is too young and begs her to come home.

bgm - Olivia. I love this song. "Some stuff that happened. A mild case of OCD. A neighbourhood mom played the violin."
Belle & Sebastian - Sleep the Clock Around. Apparently this song is good for walking. (To someplace better?)
