Mixtape Experiment 2009

Fourth annual music mixtape "experiment" starts today, folks.

EDIT: fixed the third link so it actually goes to last year's post. Also, finished listings are 2006, 2007, 2008[fail in posting tracklist]). /EDIT

If you'd like to participate, here's what you need to do:
  1. Post a comment with a song (including artist) or two. Make it a song that you love, or can't get out of your head, or one you think the world should know about (for good reasons. Not like, "THIS SONG IS SO HORRIBLE I MUST SHARE IT"). Quality, people.
  2. With your song(s), post some input/fun facts/insights! I'd like to make some "liner notes" to go with the mix.
  3. If I can't find the song, (or if you want to make my life easier), I will comment back and ask for it. Alternatively, post a link/email it to me.
  4. After some time has passed, I'll compile the songs into a sweet playlist and share.
Aaaaaaand go!

  • Wrecking Ball by Mother Mother

I like it because, like a bunch of their songs, its pessimistic(ish) lyrics with an upbeat tone making it awesome.

  • Maybe I'm late to the party, whatever.

    Muscles - Sweaty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7Ho2eYnaWc)

So obnoxious, so annoying, so unassuming, so heartfelt, and so shamefully addictive!

  • Oh yeah, insight.

I think what I really like about it is that it's a bit like LCD Soundsystem, an act consisting of a dude who by all rights should write fingersnapping hipster music and yet here we have a dirty dance record better suited for underground tween raves.

OK LCD Soundsystem is a bit different but you get the idea.

Second, this is probably the most genuine and naked display of mail vulnerability I've ever seen from a dude. I've never really trusted most 'emotional' displays from any singer. There are people who can evoke through imagery, but very few who can say "this is what I'm feeling" without it feeling a bit immature and overwrought.

LCD Soundsystem guy (James Murphy) can, but he wraps it in both the experience of middle-age and a certain personality that remains above it all, if sympathetically so.

In contrast, Muscles sounds genuine. It sounds like the dude just wants life to be simple and rave-filled and consisting of fun and romance. He does that without leaning on defensive masculinity or augmenting melodrama.

Sometimes a dude just wants to dance stupidly and brush the hand of someone he likes!

    (No I'm not projecting <.<)

  • The Junction 2 songs
"(We Come) In Components of Four" (original)
    " "

I would be very surprised if you can find these online without LOTS of digging so they will be emailed.

This is a band I saw at a YMCA in grade 10ish. our YMCA had these local bands play almost every other weekend and it's where all the scenesters (hopefully you know what I mean by this) would hang out. My friends and I, having nothing better to do that evening, went. The first band was punky-emoish and we really didn't enjoy it. We were debating on leaving but figured we'd at least give the next band a chance and see their first song. These guys came on and we loved them.

You kinda had to be there but you could really tell how much they loved being there. hey all had smiles while playing and seemed like they wouldn't be anywhere else given the chance. It transferred over to the crowd. Which was the complete opposite of the first band.

It is also one of the few bands I've seen with a black keyboardist (who is gone now and is a big part of why their stuff online doesn't comapre) and the guitarist having a capo on the 8th or 9th fret for the intro. (in the song " ") I included it just so you could hear it

The first song is my fav of theirs and it's really cool cause I've switched back and forth with my belief that the lyrics are meaningful.

...phew, done. I don't know how you manage to get me to do these things. I guess I just have a soft spot for you and your time sinks.

  • Chocolate Jesus by Tom Waits.

I won't comment except to quote his own introduction to the song when he performed it on the Letterman Show (and I suggest watching that taped performance on YouTube):

"This is a song for those of you in the audience who have trouble getting up on Sunday morning and going to church. I've discovered something that's a candy item, it's actually kind of an... immaculate confection. It's a cross on one side and there's a Bible inscription on the other. You can put it in your mouth and when it's gone, you can get up and leave.

This is something for the kids on Easter, this is called a Chocolate Jesus."

  • For something that doesn't clash too much with the rest of the suggestions: King of Spain by Moxy Fruvous. For my favourite song: Spike Driver Blues by Mississippi John Hurt.
