Random Tangents, Take Two...

Interesting way of looking at it.

Huh. I guess that works, then.

"I used to be the next President of the United States"

I saw "An Inconvenient Truth", directed by Davis Guggenheim, on Wednesday. It's a critically acclaimed documentary-type dealie that warns of the effects of global warming. Starring Al Gore.

Basically the film follows Al Gore as he tours around the world giving his lecture "1000 or more" times, basically a high-tech, graph-i-licious slide show. With random additions of Gore looking pensive.

It took me a while to decide how I felt about it. It's the first full-length documentary that I've watched all the way through, and even then I nodded off in the middle due to tiredness and being cold in the theatre... however, I think the overall message of the film made a good point: we are creating ridiculous amounts of greenhouse gases, and should attempt to cut back. The cartoons, graphs, diagrams, photos, etc. of the presentation were quite effective and shocking, but the film would have been more effective if it just followed Gore's presentation. I would rather watch that than cuts to Gore looking out plane windows, flashbacks in highly pixelated form (which drove me completely bonkers), and weird segues to the next section of the film.

Many times I thought the film was ending but then it just looped back into the next segment. Also, I read that one plane flight creates about the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions as
an entire year's worth of vehicle driving...and Gore was jetting around quite a bit.

Hm. So, in conclusion I recommend watching it, but I would wait for VHS/DVD.

"Interesting" "random" happenings of the day

-"learned" how to skateboard (read: move along on a skateboard) and almost immediately flew off, turning my spine in an awkward direction and nearly smashing my bottle of orange juice

-Covered a door in tin foil and bright neon orange lettering

-Went to a "garage sale" and acquired a bunch of cool artsy decorating stuff

-Witnessed the invention of a genius shelving unit

-Realized it was Friday and that I forgot to create a VBM comic

-Listened to "Muse" and concluded that yes, they do sound like Radiohead

-Discovered that I had apple pie but decided not to eat any

-Discussed Nascar, women's rights, and quitting jobs all within the space of about 15 minutes

-Said "What's Crack-a-lackin!" and confused some co-workers

That was fast

Blu-ray disc pirating already?!

I love it when they think of stuff like this

Blu-ray discs, the newest in video-type technology...I've heard of them before, but the nerd in me was excited to find out that they hold more data than normal discs because a BLUE LASER is used to read/write the disc (as opposed to the typical RED laser), and because blue has a shorter wavelength than red light, more data can be fit onto the disc! Genius!

I don't know what to tell you

Today's Dinosaur Comic offers tips for men and women!

One of many random discoveries of the day

Brian Eno created this Windows 95 Startup "song". According to Wikipedia, he was asked by Microsoft to create a piece of music...that was 3 and 1/4 seconds long. Sick buggy.

Observation

Cleaning up a computer's files is like cleaning a room: you find some good stuff and some crap, but a lot of it just takes up space and hits the recycle bin.

Corny joke

What kind of dance does a pretzel do best?

The twist.

It's so close!

The summer! I'm excited!!!

The weather's certainly co-operating...I think it was about 35 degrees Celsius yesterday, or at least it felt like it.

Ah yes, almost forgot. I'm going to buy another New Pornographers cd/album (I have Twin Cinema), but which of "Mass Romantic" and "Electric Version" would people recommend, given that I'm only going to be purchasing one at this time? Muchos gracias for any input.

Fun With Photoshop

This site features a bunch of contests for a theme...one of them is "Band Name Literalisms", some of them are pretty good or pretty smart.

I like this. HA and this one's punny.

Axolotl

So this may only be of interest/relevant to myself, because I am an axolotl, but whatever.

Apparently the term "axolotl", which is a type of Mexican salamander, is also used in the Dune series of books as some type of breeding/cloning machine, and then to produce the addictive spice that is important in the series. (It's been quite a while since I've read Dune, and I believe Axolotl is mentioned in the later books, which I haven't read).

Cool.

Fun times

I've been hiccupping for the past 15 minutes.

Moral of the story: Don't eat a veal-on-a-bun sandwich within a 5-minute time span late at night.

No more movie clips

I have (finally) switched to Mozilla Firefox. It's "aboot time", as some might say. The lack of pop-ups is nice, though it seems to be taking longer to load images on any given site.

Also, through Amber I have learned how to make a little icon picture come up beside website names!! Hoorah! I've done one for Valence Bond Man and might do one for here too. I'm having fun, to say the least.

"You don't run faster, I"ll pull your cd from the store!"

I really do need to listen to BSS's latest album. Here's the video for "Fire-Eyed Boy".

How much do I love Ultimate Frisbee?

So much.

Honestly, I've never played a game/sport where you can get so INTO it, with the possible exception of soccer, though I tend to have better hand-eye co-ordination that foot-eye coo-ordination.

Plus when you play Ultimate you tend to not get hit about 50 times with the projectile in a 2 hour period. Eesh. It was like "AIM AT ROBYN" day on Friday. But I scored a goal, so it was okay.

Anyways, Ultimate. If you haven't played, you should. Go now.

Came up with this one all by myself

What happens when an actor and a mathmatician meet?

I don't know, but it's sure to be dramathic!
